Moseley v Gala – kick off 3.00pm @ Billesley Common
For immediate release: Monday 10th December 2012
B&I Cup, Saturday 15th December
The B&I Cup Pool 6 leaders Moseley welcome the famous Scottish Borders club Gala for a first ever visit to Billesley Common this Saturday – kick off 3pm. It will be a festive affair off the pitch as it is the Birmingham club's final home game before Christmas.
The clubhouse decorations along with mince pies and mulled wine should help get both sets of supporters into the season of good will “off the pitch”. However, on the pitch Moseley will be expecting another tough encounter from a side led by 48 cap Samoan back row Opeta Palepoi and will be wary of prolific goal kicker Lee Miller who notched three successful kicks at goal at Netherfields last weekend in a low scoring but competitive encounter in the reverse fixture between the clubs.
Victories away at London Scottish and home against Llanelli mean that progress in this competition is in the Birmingham club’s hands. After the visit of Gala there is a break in the Cup until Friday 11th January when London Scottish will be hosted at Billesley in a floodlit encounter (7:30pm kick off). The final pool match will then be the following Saturday when Moseley will visit Llanelli.
The South Birmingham team will be aiming to reverse the close loss in the ‘away leg’ last weekend (Gala 18-11 Moseley), and a home win could go a long way to confirming progress to the quarter finals of the Cup to which only the pool winners proceed. Pool 6 currently stands as follows:
Team P W D L F A B Pts Pts
Moseley 3 2 0 1 88 81 3 11
Gala 3 2 0 1 73 72 1 9
London Scottish 3 1 0 2 84 83 3 7
Llanelli 3 1 0 2 79 88 1 5
Gala Rugby Football Club was formed in 1876, won the borders league for the first time in 1906 and appeared in the final of the first ever, world famous, Melrose sevens and currently competes in the Scottish Premier League.
Among the 44 internationals the club has produced, the early seventies saw Gala contribute six players to the Scotland team including Number 8 and Scotland captain Peter Brown. Other notable Gala internationals include 32 cap back row David Leslie, 82 cap and British Lion Gregor Townsend and two times Scotland World Cup Number 8 Derek White.
Gala’s results so far in the B&I Cup have been home victories over London Scottish and Moseley whilst losing in South Wales to Llanelli. All to play for – for both sides!
