The Advent of Rotherham at Moseley on Saturday

The first day of Advent brings the visit of Rotherham to Moseley’s Billesley Common ground in South Birmingham this Saturday (Sat 1st Dec) for a lunchtime 12.45 pm kick off. It also marks the end of the first half of the Championship season with fixtures reversing from the following weekend.

This will be a match of contrasting styles as the visitors’ traditional huge pack will want to dominate possession while Moseley’s dangerous backs will be keen to exploit any ball which comes their way. The welcome return of Greg King, renewing his centre partnership with Championship XV star Charlie Hayter, should provide Moseley with more of a cutting edge in midfield.

There will be plenty of familiar faces on both sides as Moseley Head Coach Kevin Maggs (who joined from Rotherham three seasons ago) recognises former Moseley players such as lock Dan Sanderson, prop Marshall Gadd, and full back Ed Styles in Rotherham colours. Likewise Moseley’s squad includes former Rotherham players such as full back Anthony Carter and wing Brad Hunt.

Whilst the last five home games have provided just a single win (36-26 against Llanelli in the B&I Cup) home support will recognise that close encounters against Cornish Pirates (9-9) and Nottingham (17-28) and Plymouth (22-24) could all have resulted in the home victories eagerly sought.

Saturday’s lunchtime encounter will certainly be a hotly contested match up of contrasting styles and one not to be missed. The England v All Blacks match will be screened live on the clubhouse TV’s after the game.

Yet another home game I'm going to miss because of work - yet work isn't the reason I will miss the game. It is all because of the 12.45 kick off.

I changed my work times so that I could get to all the home games - bit of a squeeze to get there for kick off but at least I would be there - and now England are on 't tele' the same day, hence the early Moseley kick off. I wont even be able to squeeze in the last 5 mins of the Moseley game either even if I get home by fast jet. Talk about sods law again.

Rotherham Team News:

The only change across the Titans back line sees Pale Nonu return at inside centre. In the pack, Ross Davies comes back in at tight head prop, whilst there is a welcome return for Latu Makaafi and Rory pitman from long term injuries.

Makaafi returns to the side at blind side flanker, following a 10 week lay-off after sustaining a painful triple fracture of his collarbone during Titans match against Jersey in September. Rory Pitman starts at number 8 following his 6 weeks absence through fracturing his eye socket in the B&I Cup victory over Plymouth Albion.

There’s a bench spot for new-boy Harry Hannan, who joined the Titans from Leeds Carnegie this week. Hannan is 21 years-old, plays hooker and is a real prospect with much expected from the Yorkshire man.

The Moseley match sees Titans new Head Coach Alex Codling take charge for the first time and looking ahead to tomorrow’s game he said, “Moseley is always a difficult place to go and I’ve got a lot of time for the coaches down there and what they are trying to achieve. We will have to be super-disciplined and look to put things right which were a problem against Leeds last week.

“We were disappointed that we didn’t control the ball better in the second half and there were errors made which we have looked at this week in training.”

Hard to understand the front row selection based on recent performances but I'm sure the coaches know better than I do and I will be delighted if they are proved right.

Talking about huge players? Can anyone remember the name and the incident of that South Sea islander prop we had in the 90's?
We played at Rotherham and he was in the team. His upper body development was so unbelievable the touch judge told the ref he felt something was wrong and the ref made the player take his shirt off to prove he had no illegal padding/protection! Strange but a good laugh!

I think it was the year Roth got into PL and we drew with them 13-13?

On to-days game. It seems Roth are still a massive set of lads but if we hit them early at source then it will be difficult for them to get their juggernaut going? Make them turn and make them work hard and we can get something from this game, something being a win, inshallah.

Why is the RFU site showing the result 8-36? I was unfortunately there and saw an abysmal performance and we lost 16-20.

Poor decision making in last 15 minutes. Yet another match we could, should, have won.

No more ifs, buts, maybes or 'lets take the positives from this'.

Our so called senior/'star' players need to sort this out.

Quite agree, Gary, but the 'poor decision making' wasn't simply confined to the players on the pitch. The 5 forwards and 2 backs split on the subs bench was pretty dire too! Indeed, the fact that we ended up with three number 10s (Hughes, Thomas and Davies) in our back division at the end of the game, just when the game was opening up and our superior pace and fitness might have started to be translated into points, simply beggars belief. (Why wasn't Billy Robinson playing? He didn't look injured to me...) I understand the temptation of wanting to put an extra prop-forward on 'pine duty', but against the heaviest pack in the league the thought of uncontested scrums would surely not have been altogether unappealing!
And on a more general note, the conservative selection of Ollie Thomas on the wing is always going to bring a conspicuous lack of balance to our three-quarter line and simply has to stop. Either Ollie plays at 10, and the management show faith in his all-round game (as opposed to just his considerable place-kicking skills) or he doesn't play. Like wise, either Glynn Hughes is entrusted with the kicking duties or he doesn't play. What the management are currently indulging in is a half-way house solution that satisfies neither party and might less generously be described as a 'buggers muddle', which seems to contribute to the most painfully predictable of outcomes.
Please can we take a leaf out of the more adventurous approach adopted in our selection and performance in the B&I Cup, Kevin?

Uncontested scrums these days are not as appealing as they used to be as you have to forfeit another player and play with 14, so I believe.
The only more stupid decision that the referee's not to bin their player on the line when a fight broke out and Waggy got a card, but the original offender went unpunished (this HAD to be a card) was the decision to continue opting for scrums at the end once their pack was up to full strength; bloody idiotic. To be fair I thought the pack fronted up well today but we lacked a genuine cutting edge attack.

a bit harsh Rob in both your posts? I thought Rotherham were pretty good first half, very strong runners & off loading- they created a number of opportunites & Moseley hung in well. Pleased to come off 9-8 up. Yes their first try was a lack of concentration, we looked like scoring- camped on their line - ref gave a penalty against Moseley. They tapped & went wide with a two on one against Hunt - who hadn't helped himself, by moaning to fans about decision & not watching play. But the guy ran in from 70 yards unopposed - presume Carter was caught in attack.

Second half two decent trys with good hands meant 9- 20. There were Moseley injured bodies everywhere & it could have got very nasty. King, Hayter & Pienear all off injured - at one point we had hooker Wilkes in centre - but for the last half hour we ran everything & so nearly got there.

Yes- too many, what if maybes again - but 'not playing for shirt' sounds like they gave up & that is so far from the truth. Enjoyed game. Poor decisions to take scrums at end rather than tap penalties? & Sanderson won every lineout all game - but if we had got that try & snuck a win.........

Great photos as usual Harish. I was hoping their would be one showing the incident when Wag got sin-binned, I am sure all he did was shout and glare. But perhaps I am a bit one eyed.

Is the image you were thinking of Bob? Looking at this and other pics in the sequence it seems Waggy was unfairly yellow carded!

Lets hope for a home win Sat against Gala - much needed and to put us in xmas sprits.
