Annual Cricket Match - Now Fri 3rd Aug, 6pm start

The new date for the cricket match against Moseley Ashfield CC is Friday 3rd August. The match starts at 6.00 pm and is a 20-20 contest.

Catering arrangements are as previously advised (stunning cricketer's tea @ £10.00 and/or barbeque items) and we need to advise approximate numbers on Wednesday 1st August.

With the prospect of decent weather ahead, it will be good to get a sizeable turnout of support for this event!

Last orders for cricket teas!

Moseley Ashfield will be producing an excellent ‘Cricketers Tea’ for the match on Friday (3rd). Available for spectators (must book in advance!) at a very reasonable £10 / head.

However they do need to confirm numbers by TODAY - Wednesday 1st August. If you are interested in partaking please let Peter Veitch (– [e-mail] 07801 800201) or Brian Skeeles (0121 472 0744) know in advance.

………………If the tea isn’t your thing we have it on good authority that Alan Thomas is planning a barbeque with the usual burgers & bangers. Available for all without pre-booking!!

Match starts at 6pm. Expected finish around 8.30/9pm. Bar open all evening!

Errol Anderson – former 1st XV Winger and Supporters Player of the year in 1994/95
Oliver Thomas – current 1st XV squad member - needs no introduction (full back/fly half)
Dan Protherough – club’s community department
Dave Brazier (WK) – former Colt won his first 1st XV contract this season (scrum half)
Caolan Ryan – former Colt won his first 1st XV contract this season (centre/full back)
Charlie Hayter – new signing for 2012/13 from Worcester (centre)
Tony Caesar – Vice President & Moseley Rugby Community Foundation trustee
Rich Protherough - former 1st XV Captain and retained as stand by last few seasons (hooker)
Ben Jowitt – Moseley Oak Secretary

The forecast is 'mixed' but a similar forecast to last night when a match at Ashfield was succesfully completed. Any news will be posted here - assume it is ON unless otherwise posted!

Those with a sharp mind will notice that this makes 13 in total!
Perhaps we started off selecting ‘XV’ as usual, found Ashfield only put out ‘ XIs’ and settled for a rugby league 13?!

Whilst the rugby position may not be strictly relevant on the cricket field, it may provide spectators with an indication of their likely strengths an pssible (not likely!) weaknesses.

Moseley (Rugby) retain the Memorial Trophy
T/20 – Moseley Rugby win by 9 runs

A win for the rugby club on Friday night (3rd Aug) squares up the ‘series’ that has been running for 12 years - but is the 4th win in a row for the ‘oval ball’ side.

Despite a poor forecast in the days running up to the game, it was played in warm and largely sunny conditions at Ashfield’s Yardley Wood Road ground.

The Rugby Club batted first with Dan Protherough and Ollie Thomas making a cautious start against tight bowling. After a couple of cheap overs for Ashfield, Thomas decided to loosen his arms and peppered both the club house and the neighbouring houses as he quick fired his way to 65 before falling to ‘the slower one’ and seeing the bail slip off the leg stump.

Protherough (Dan) kept the scoreboard ticking over on his way to 41. Dave Brazier got to 11 before perishing , Sam Brown and Callum Macburnie had a bat............ then good late hitting from Alex Warner (37 not out) gave the rugby club a strong looking 161 after 20 overs.

The target of 162 meant 8 an over but 3.4 mean overs from Caesar (including a wicket and a couple of tricky missed catches/stumpings) put the cricket club on the spot. Rich Brown then got his eye in with the final two balls of the 4 over spell crashing 2 mighty sixes onto the clubhouse roof leaving the ‘opening bowler’ with stats of 4-0-20-1.

The cricket club built up some momentum with a series of boundaries and at the half way stage had started to claw themselves back into the game with the help of some ‘rusty’ rugby players feeling their way back into cricket. The longer they bowled though the better they got.........including Sam and Callum.

Ben Jowett dragged control back to the rugby club side after an alarming start to his spell and ended with figures of 4-0-20-0. Rich Protherough twirled his leggies and deserved his success including a fine catch from Colin Brazier.

4 overs to go and 10 an over required...........could Ashfield nick it?

A stunning catch at a very gloomy deep long on from Alex Warner along with Colin Brazier finding his bowling skills returning gave the rugby club the momentum.

After a shaky start to his last two overs skipper Protherough had the relative luxury of defending 18 on the last over.................no last minute jitters as he bowled a tight line and length to ensure that 11 off the last two balls wasn’t going to happen.

The fielding (apart from a couple of difficult catches spilled) was excellent and as you’d expect from fit rugby players they chased balls towards the boundary well and returned to the keeper with ease – this element was probably the key in restricting the hosts to their 152.

Our thanks to the hosts for a cracking game which Brian Skeeles described as probably the best in the 12 year history of the memorial trophy when he presented the cup to the winning captain.

Our thanks also to Ashfield for a superb tea enjoyed by a good crowd who had the dual entertainment of cricket outside and Pendleton & Co winning gold inside.......what a choice!

Hi Wobbler, You're right! We should have put this year's details up here - although it has been promoted in 'Moseley Matters'. For the players, official start time is 6.00 pm, but 6.30 is rather more realistic!

Bar will be open, refreshments are available, weather should be excellent and I am sure that another win for MRC is there for the taking! See you there!
