Birmingham Moseley look to the future

As part of the club’s philosophy to be at the forefront of developing rugby talent in Birmingham Adam Balding is pleased to confirm the Senior Academy players for the 2022/23 season.

With a number of players continuing from last season, and exciting new additions the future of senior rugby at the club is looking very promising.

In the backline wing Jamal Gask-Clarke scorer of the supporters “club try of the season” and centre Ollie Jones, both who were prominent in Mosley Oak’s promotion campaign last season are joined by Portuguese fly half Goncalo Costa.

Up front loose head Prop Jamie Constantine and back row Jack English will be looking to build off a unique development season in 2021/22 which saw them undertake a loan period at ACS Tomitanii in Constanta, Romania. Hooker Akron Rayworth-Brooks, who was selected for the Midlands U20 squad along with Jack, is joined in the front row by versatile Joe Farmer a product of Wasps Academy who has played both prop and second row to date. Completing the Academy intake is back row Ollie Southgate who so impressed for Oak last season that he won the award of player of the year.

As Senior Academy players they will train with the 1st XV squad, while playing rugby with Moseley Oak or on loan to other local clubs, with the aim of breaking into the 1st XV match day squad during the season.

Director of Rugby Adam Balding said “The Senior Academy players are a great group to work with. All of them are committed, enthusiastic and are the future of this club. I look forward to seeing how they take the next step in their careers this season and hope more players will look to follow in their footsteps.”

Things are looking bright for the young ones at our club but bleak for us seasoned walking rugby vets. It's looking like us vets are gonna have to train just that little bit harder to even get a toe hold into the first team squad, never mind a contract. Ah well onwards and upwards.

Getting slightly ahead of myself here but supposing lets say we were promoted and suddenly found ourselves chasing promotion to the premiership in the not too distant future are there any contingency plans in place for that to happen I wonder regarding ground capacity etc

I understand there is planing permission in place for opposite main stand with ground criteria having to be 10,001,it would be another similar sized stand.
That would be a risk to spend millions in these difficult times and then the Premiership might then have changed the criteria.

did the planning actually go through in the end for the other side though (let alone any work done to lock it in)? I remember the drawings were for (from memory) something like 5,000 seats and it looked like the Cov one at Butts Park.

My own opinions on this as a fan though are:

- I'm not sure I want Moseley to be in the premiership

- linked to above, I think (and I've said this before) that were we to suddenly be in the Premiership we'd have to move. I could see the Common as a training ground, but even with expensive redevelopment I think that you could get a 10,000 seat stadium on our site quite happily, but it's in the wrong place for that sort of thing in terms of road/rail access and position within the wider city. We'd have to run fleets of shuttle buses at a minimum.

Anyway, it's July 2022 so I'm (definitely) overthinking this.

Will there be any further announcements of players joining next week or will there be trialists at the training sessions. Can I assume that we will be able to attend training as we have in previous years? These were normally on a Saturday morning.

Normal training nights are Tues & Thurs. The clubhouse is open so supporters are welcome to come along and watch some training while enjoying the odd cooling beverage.

We will let supporters know if any Saturday morning training sessions are scheduled.
