Congratulations to Aquile Smith who has been selected for the Jamaican 7s squad looking to qualify for the Commonwealth Games
We asked Aquile for his thoughts on selection
How did you come to the attention of the Jamaican selectors?
I’ve been training with Jamaica sevens for a few years now but due to XV’s commitments I’ve not played as much as I wanted in the past… however since COVID I’ve realised the importance of just taking every moment as it comes and so decided to take the opportunities that arose. this was a great opportunity to play with Jamaica in our sevens journeys and ultimately qualifying for the commonwealth games.
What would it mean to you to represent Jamaica and take part in the Commonwealth games?
We haven’t qualified yet but I’m always honoured to represent my heritage wherever we play. Qualifying for the games would be a separate honour in itself just playing sevens at that level and promoting the quality we have after all the years hard work from the boys would be class
What are you personally hoping to get from your time at the games?
Just trying to take in the experience…again after all this covid stuff sharing the good vibes and putting on a show for everyone getting together would be the main aim for a nation like Jamaica in the sevens on a platform like the games
Any 7s heroes you will be looking to emulate?
In terms of my style I just try do what works…and then add some flavour. I take from too many to name but Benji Marshall was a player who if I can get a highlight reel on his level I’ll retire happy to be honest… But I think sevens is just about expressing your own game to be honest. So hopefully there’s bits of all the greats in my game.
