The biggest news that excited Birmingham Moseley supporters last summer was Adam Balding’s massive coup of signing Wasps South African International Ashley Johnson as player/coach. Almost equal was the disappointment of supporters not getting the chance to see the rampaging Johnson in red and black tearing up National One pitches as the season never took place.
All should be put right, however, as Ashley has some unfinished business and has committed himself again to the club. Equally at home at hooker or in the back row Ashley will again take the role of forwards/defence coach bringing the experience of nearly 200 Premiership appearances to the club.
Another player to sign for the non-season of 2020/21 was returning hooker Ryan Roach. Ryan originally joined the club in 2017 from Cardiff Met and quickly established himself as a key member of the front row making 44 appearances even though injury kept him out of the first half of the 2018/19 season. In 2019 Ryan moved to Ealing Trailfinders, but within a season he had decided he missed playing for the club and returned to Billesley Common. A very popular player with supporters Ryan will continue to deliver upon the undoubted talents he displayed in his first seasons at the club.
Moving back through the pack the club is very pleased to confirm former Colt Harry Dawson has again been signed for the new season. Harry progressed from Mini & Junior & Colts levels in the club through the Academy set up to spend time training with the 1st XV squad while also gaining experience via regular appearances for Moseley Oak, who he captained. A versatile player Harry can cover second and back row and will be looking to progress to the next step of his Birmingham Moseley journey by pulling on a first team shirt this season.
Our fourth signing is a player who brings a significant amount of Championship & Premiership level experience to the club in 6’ 3” back row Will Safe who joins from Hartpury. England U20 International Will progressed from Hartpury College to the Gloucester Academy where he went on to earn a 1st XV contract. Will moved back to Hartpury in 2019, to play Championship rugby, for whom he has now played a total of 73 games, starting in 61 of them. Able to play No8 or on the flank Will provides mobility and a physical presence to the pack.
