Birmingham Moseley Rugby have benefited from their close relationship with Premiership club Wasps by signing marquee player Ashley Johnson.
Ashley has been one of Wasps stand out players, making 198 appearances for the club over 8 seasons, only missing out on his double century due to the enforced postponement of the season. He was being pursued by a number of high profile clubs, in South Africa and the English Premiership, and we are delighted that he has decided to stay in the Midlands and be influential in helping the club achieve its ambitious plans for the future.
Ashley is a real talisman and had a tremendous following at Wasps where he became a favourite of the fans. He joined Wasps from his native South Africa where he played for The Cheetahs. He made 35 Super Rugby and 63 Provincial appearances. Ashley played international rugby for the Springboks, his debut being against Australia in 2009. With an unmistakable hairstyle, Ashley is known for his huge ball carrying and bulldozing running skills, not to mention his fearsome tackling. He plays both in the back row and at hooker and has been described by Wasps management as “one of best signings in their history”.
Ashley will be joining Birmingham Moseley as a player coach. Coaching is not new to him as he has spent a lot of time with junior clubs in the local area particularly with Broadstreet where he linked up with his fellow countryman and recent Birmingham Moseley player Cliffie Hodgson.
Of his signing Ashley said:
“I’m really looking forward to start my coaching career at such a historic club. And to be able to still play while getting the opportunity to learn from Adam (Balding) and Glacks (Pete Glackin) was the perfect fit for me.”
Birmingham Moseley are raising funds through GOFUNDME under the banner ‘I built the team’ and with such generous support of the supporters we are able to bring such a prestigious player to the club.

Adam Balding, Director of Rugby said:
“I am delighted that the club have been able to attract someone with the values of Ashley Johnson, he will fit in well with the ethos of the club. He is a very humble guy and his presence around the club will be well received. I look forward to welcoming him and witnessing his skills both on and off the pitch.”
