Moseley Oak Leek League Points
Leek 8-6 Moseley Oak [/b]
Moseley Oak found themselves the wrong side of a very tight match against Leek, going down 8-6 but picking up a losing bonus point.
The game could have gone either way – and the visitors had their chances to nick it at the death.
First, a long range Dan Pons penalty fell just short and then one from shorter distance but wide out slipped past the post.
It was agonising stuff.
Moseley Oak were forced to shuffle the front row just prior to the game following a disrupting eleventh hour call-off, which meant Jonathan Duckers had to play 80 minutes at tight head prop while Ciaran Murphy came in at hooker.
It was a headache they could have done without.
Nevertheless Moseley Oak came out of the traps fighting and put in an excellent performance up the slope.
It was harsh then to be down 5-3 at half time to a Nick Palmer try in the corner which should have been stopped, with Pons replying with a penalty.
While Leek had the edge in the tight scrums, Moseley Oak had some wonderful rumbling mauls, one going 40 metres. The Moseley Oak lineout was secure and they regularly disrupted the Leek one.
The home side noticeably stepped it up after half-time and for 15 minutes Moseley Oak hardly had the ball. But they stuck to their task doggedly and came back strongly.
Neither side though looked like crossing each other’s line.
Pons boot produced three points to put Moseley Oak’s noses in front.
But Leek then missed two kickable penalties before Gary McDermott got a straight-forward one over.
That gave them the lead back.
And they kept it to the end.
In the forwards second rows Duncan White and Clark Hands played well. In the backs Jack Richards tackled his heart out and full-back Jonathan Perks was solid under the high ball.
On another day it would have been a victory.
