Moseley Oak control Birmingham derby
Moseley Oak 34-7 Camp Hill
Moseley Oak picked up a relatively easy five points as they get set for two huge matches against fellow top three Crewe & Nantwich and Leek.
The home side, on a beautiful crisp sunlit day for rugby, had Camp Hill on the ropes by half time.
Early pressure produced a Jon Perks penalty in front of the posts and then the full back converted his own score after James Weaver shrugged off two attempted tackles to send him clear.
It was all Moseley Oak and when one of Camp Hill’s winger’s got yellow carded you knew more points were coming.
The pace of Jack Mclaren and Jack Fairhurst was hurting the visitors and both were next to cross.
Mclaren shimmied three opponents to touch down and then it was Fairhurst’s turn to hit the after-burners.
Good interplay between French fly half Pierre Meunier and back row forward Charley Thomas got the latter over, fourth try and bonus point, and at half time it was a deserved 29-0.
In comparison the second period was poor.
Centre Adam Billig, who straightens play for Moseley Oak had gone off injured, leading to the three quarters constantly running out of room on the outside.
Experienced and composed wing forward Ben Gerry, chief mess fixer, had also retired sore, with the result that the forwards were less structured.
Too much showboating and Moseley Oak weren’t pretty on the eye.
For 20 minutes it was a dull stalemate – lots of endeavour but a dearth of skill.
Finally Moseley Oak created an overlap for Jack Richards to touch down in the corner.
A gritty Camp Hill side never gave up and managed a consolation towards the end through Stu Watts.
Which left a 34-7 result.
Unsung Moseley Oak scrum half Ed Jeffrey played well as did props Dan Toth and Adrian Courtney. Dan Lavander was a big ball carrier. Let’s be generous and say Moseley Oak played within themselves – not something they can afford over the next two weekends.
