N Mids Shield 1/4 Finals: Droitwich 12-15 Moseley Oak

Oak took advantage of a cup weekend to rest 12 of last weekend's starting 1st XV ahead of a tough run of fixtures in Midlands 2 prior to Christmas.

They left it late  scoring the winning try in the closing minutes to move into the semi finals of the North Midlands Shield.

Moseley Oak centre James Frost blew hot and cold as the side nicked a tight encounter 15-12 away to Droitwich in the North Midlands Shield – a result which puts them into the semi-finals.

Frost scored two excellent tries either side of an intercepted pass which allowed the home side back into the game.

It was an open contest on a big pitch and in dry conditions, producing a splendid display from both teams.

Cut and thrust in the first half, Moseley Oak, playing a mix of first teamers, fringe players and up and coming talent, ground out points first through a Jack McLaren penalty and then a converted Frost score as his pace shredded defenders on the outside.

A try created by forward pressure and followed up by quick movement down the backs.

All starting from a quick throw following a Droitwich clearance kick.

At half time it was a deserved 10-0 to Moseley Oak.

Indeed they could have been further ahead as a penalty kick bounced back from a post and a siege of the Droitwich line was well defended.

And so it continued at the start of the second period.

But the interception, with Sam Davenport taking advantage and then converting from in front of the posts, changed the game.

Now it was Droitwich with their tails up and taking it to Moseley Oak.

Pinned back, the away team finally conceded a second try to a push over, with Droitwich captain James Shewell touching down underneath a mass of bodies.

The turnaround saw Droitwich ahead 12-10 and looking like winners.

But Moseley Oak got it back together, exerted pressure and slick handling allowed Frost to break the line.

The final few minutes were easily seen out.

A creditable victory with forwards Michael Maguire, Dan Lavander and the returning Greg Cox all outstanding.
