Midlands 2 West: Moseley Oak 37-16 Old Salts
Moseley Oak salt away a win
Moseley Oak beat Old Salts 37-16 at Billesley Common in a match where they never quite hit full power but were always comfortable.
In spells the home side were excellent; in others they cruised.
Lack of discipline had an effect, with Moseley Oak capitalising on two Old Salts yellow cards in the first half.
In addition, early on the referee took a dim view of an away team player seeking to influence his conduct of the game, penalising him, and in the second period invited home coach John White to take a breather after a voluble assessment from the sidelines of the state of proceedings.
Moseley Oak were off on the front foot with a penalty from Chris Carlin, equalised by Lewis Beaty.
Repeated thrusts by the forwards then produced an overlap out wide for Jon Perks to cross – 8-3.
More coordinated pressure by forwards and backs allowed the burly Simon Homer to rumble over.
And right on half time further clever interplay and Jack Fairhurst walked the ball in – 20-3 at half time.
But, if Moseley Oak thought this was going to be easy, they were quickly disabused as first Old Salts slotted a penalty and then Tom Lee outflanked the defence to draw within nine points.
Clearly stung, Moseley Oak hit back allowing Perks, in acres of space, to grab his second and the team’s bonus point fourth.
They then made it completely safe.
First, pace and brawn enabled forwards Adrian Courtney and Charlie Thomas to make ground, leaving Jack Fairhurst a straight-forward touch down. Next, a scintillating injection of speed from Jack McLaren skinned Old Salts down the wing.
Tom Burrows got a consolation, but Moseley Oak were a happy bunch.
Impressive were Perks, Courtney and Thomas. Fly half Carlin notched two conversions.
But in truth all the 18-strong squad produced good performances.
Moseley Oak remain unbeaten after the first three fixtures, a formidable start to the Midlands Two West (North) season.
