Director of Rugby Adam Balding has confirmed his management team for the coming season, and like the playing squad there is continuity with last season plus some exciting additions.
On the coaching side Pete Glackin and Ashley Johnson will again team up to orchestrate the match day plans as Head Coach and Forwards/Defence coach respectively. Adam commented: “I am very pleased we have been able to keep a coaching team of the calibre of Pete and Ashley together this season. During 2021/22 they made great strides in developing a playing style and game plan with a brand new squad. With the vast majority of that squad retained I am confident Pete & Ashley will build on this and push the team forward to significant success in the upcoming campaign.”
Rob Norman will be ensuring the team is one of the fittest in the league in his capacity as Strength & Conditioning Coach. Harley Williams will remain as 1st XV Manager and Jack Richards will provide match analysis.
Keeping the team fit to play will be Physiotherapists Ellie Hume and Matt Alcock. Head of Medical James Neil finds career developments take him away from the club and we wish him well for the future.
Two new roles, with an eye on the future see Rob Fuller take on the position of Transition Coach and Simon Bartlett that of Player Pathway Manager.
After Rob’s 1st XV season was cruelly cut short due to serious injury, he will stay with the club with a remit to ensure consistency and direction in coaching across all the teams in the club. A key factor in this will be that players experience a consistent approach in developing the Birmingham Moseley playing philosophy.
Rob commented: “I think it’s a really exciting step forward for the club looking to further develop and support our home grown talent and enhancing the pathway through the club up to the 1st XV.
I’m very grateful for Balders and the committee giving me this opportunity as I myself, transition away from playing and into a new coaching role. While I was disappointed being able to contribute so little on the pitch last season through injuries, I’ve really enjoyed my time at Birmingham Moseley so it’s great being able to continue here.”
Simon Bartlett has been known for many seasons as a driving force behind youth rugby development in the club. The role of Player Pathway Manager is the logical development of Simon’s passion, looking to ensure there are clear routes for players to progress through the age grade levels of rugby on to senior appearances for Moseley Oak, Women’s team and of course the 1st XV.
Simon said of the appointment: “Adam and I first started talking about this shortly after his appointment to the club. It’s unfortunate that COVID and lockdowns intervened but we are now able to put the original plan in place.
I’m looking forward to this new challenge and to working directly with Adam, Pete, Ashley and Rob the new Transition Coach. Our youth sections have consistently shown that in the right circumstances our existing system is capable of producing players capable of playing 1st XV rugby at BMRC.
I’ll be liaising carefully with a range of coaches and team managers across the club and carefully selected external organisations to further develop the pathways, looking to increase the number of players with that capability.”
