Moseley Oak 22-17 Aston Old Eds
Moseley Oak Bag A Five Pointer
Moseley Oak held on to beat a battling Aston Old Edwardians 22-17 at Billesley Common.
It was four tries to one and on that basis alone would have been an injustice if Old Eds had nicked it at the death.
Yet, after looking well beaten half way through the second period, the visitors finished strongly.
And there was relief at the end as Moseley Oak ran down the clock.
Last minute selection difficulties again dogged the home side who took fifteen minutes to get going.
That allowed Tom McNamee to kick Old Eds into a 6-0 lead.
But then, helped by the delayed arrival of Dan Lavander, the home team got into their stride.
A rolling maul almost half the length of the pitch crossed the Old Eds 22 metre line before it was pulled down. And, with a fallback penalty to come, it was wing Antonio Solomon who took a direct approach to the line. It was converted by Ollie Harrison.
Then Solomon shrugged off some dire tackling to make it two.
The Moseley forwards were now going well and helped to set up a break by centre Jack Richards who passed inside for full back Jon Perks to score.
And eventually into the second half Moseley secured a try bonus point with the best move of the game.
With Old Eds pounding the Moseley line a spill forward was pounced on by prop Adrian Courtney. He made ground, passed to Perks who took a lovely line to get Lavander into space, and he sprinted clear.
But along the way Old Eds kept pegging Moseley back with penalties from McNamee and then captain Rob Chesney squeezed over in the corner to make it an interesting last ten minutes.
However Moseley hung in there for the win, drawing the yellow card count 2-2, losing Clark Hands and Nyasha Maphosa for ten minutes each.
The pack had some excellent rolling mauls and some thrusting pick and drives, while the lineout was solid and the opposition’s often disrupted.
The backs looked dangerous in attack and tackled their hearts out.
Solomon and Perks were the pick of the three quarters while Lavander, James Weaver, Jonathan Duckers and Tom Hall showed the way in the forwards.
Next fixture is not until into the New Year when Moseley Oak visit table toppers Stoke.
