Birmingham Moseley bring in Army frontline for assault on National One along with new backline Generals.
Adam Balding has strengthened his squad further by recruiting first choice Army players to bolster the front row.
Nathanael Titchard-Jones, a Sargent in The 1 Signal Regiment, has signed up again, having joined the club from Coventry at the end of last season. Although only making two appearances, his inclusion in the squad for the relegation battle against Loughborough Students and arguably Birmingham Moseley’s best performance of the season away against Chinnor, contributed significantly to the club’s survival in National 1. Call-ups to represent the army last year prevented him from establishing himself in the side, this season however he will have the opportunity to become part of a formidable front row.
Joining him will be Army colleague and fellow front row, hooker, Peter Austin. Peter a Bombardier in 12 Regiment of The Royal Artillery joins us from London Scottish. He spent 5 years at London Irish between 2005 and 2010 before signing up for the Army in 2013. He has been an ever present in The Army side playing a major role in their success in The Babcock Trophy match against The Navy at Twickenham earlier this year. He joined London Scottish in 2017 where he made 19 appearances. He has representative honours for England at both under 16 and 18 level.
There are many local legends in the game but this man lived up to that status while playing at Coventry. Cliffie Hodgson was a standout full back for the club earning the reputation of being an outstanding goal kicker, becoming the first player to score 1000 league points for Coventry. He was also awarded National 1 Dream Team status 3 years in a row and underlined his leadership ability by recording the most wins for a captain of the club. Since leaving the Warwickshire side in 2017 he has taken on the role of player/coach at Broadstreet.
The back line is further strengthened by the signing of fly half Ben Palmer. Ben has had two spells with Coventry initially in 2014/2015, leaving them to go to New Zealand where he played for North Otago. He returned from New Zealand and joined Henley Hawks. From there in 2016 he moved to National 1 rivals Old Albanian where he made 27 appearances scoring 173 points. Ben returned to Coventry in 2017 when he made his debut against Birmingham Moseley running in a 30 metre try under the posts. We look forward to seeing more of that this time in red and black.
Director of Rugby, Adam Balding said:
“I am delighted that we have been able to secure the services of two of the best front row players in the Armed Forces. Birmingham Moseley have always prided themselves on fielding a formidable pack and the addition of these two players will ensure we have the power in the forwards essential in this league.
Behind the pack I have brought in two players I believe have the experience and talent we need to deliver the sort of attacking rugby that can bring rewards in this league. Both Cliffie and Ben have proved themselves at this level and together with Peter and Nathanael they will support the balance between youth and experience in the side.”
