With only 5 games into the season I am struggling to remain positive. I have no doubt that the players and coaches are as disappointed as the supporters and will be working hard to rectify maters. However, having lost 4 matches and being 13 points off the top of the table any chance we had of returning to the Championship this season has all but gone. Instead, I think we are in for a battle to now survive in this league and set a platform for next season.
We have perhaps been unfortunate with injuries but all teams suffer from them. I do wonder about the logic of playing (and losing heavily) to full-time sides in some of our pre-season matches rather than building confidence and understanding amongst the squad. Could we not have arranged matches against the likes of Birmingham Solihull and Stourbridge or even Henley or Taunton from Nat 2 South? I don’t think it is hindsight to see the benefit.
At the risk of offending some, we also appear to be lacking in leadership on and off the pitch. Buster is a fantastic player, always gives 100% and is no doubt the first name on the team sheet. However, perhaps he needs more support in leading the side? Where is the Binsy or Shaggy character directing/shouting from the back of the park and where’s the ‘chatter’ from the pack? RP is a Mose man through and through but as a supporter it would be informative to know more about his take on performances and what he intends to do to address performances. Are we all on the same sheet and if so, what does it say?
With Cavesy now back in the squad we have got some valuable front row experience to call on. However, I think we are lacking it in the backs. Whilst money doesn’t grow on trees, surely there is a Daren O’Leary type player somewhere out there who can help lead the backs and turn the corner.
I would be more than delighted to be proved wrong on Saturday but I had expected us to be within much closer distance to DMP at this stage of the season than we are. We need something extra to start moving onwards and upwards.
