Cricket Match v Moseley Ashfield – Friday 5th August

The annual cricket match between Birmingham Moseley Rugby and Moseley Ashfield Cricket Club will take place on Friday 5th August at the MACC ground off Yardley Wood Road. Access is at the end of a short cul-de-sac nearly opposite the Covered Wagon pub.

The 20 overs a side match will start at 6.00pm. DoR Kevin Maggs is playing for us and we may see some of the first team players in support. Unfortunately, one of our star players, if not the star player, has probably defected to the other side, Ollie Thomas now being first team Captain at MACC. Perhaps, though, he will see sense and still turn out for us!

The MACC bar will be open during the evening and the club will provide the usual excellent buffet supper at a cost of £5 plus whatever additional donation spectators would like to make!

All are welcome, so do come along, support our boys and have an enjoyable evening in, we hope, the sunshine!

Sorry for the delay, KHL and others, but we won! Here are the details.

The annual cricket match between Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club and Moseley Ashfield Cricket Club took place on Friday 5th August. As always, MACC proved to be splendid hosts at its Yardley Wood Road headquarters.

Unfortunately, the two sides found themselves somewhat depleted on the day, despite earlier efforts to provide 22 players between them. This meant that the match was played by sides of nine players each, with 16 overs for each side. It also involved one BMRC player, our bar steward James Preston, being press-ganged into playing, even though he had never played cricket before!

MACC batted first, the innings finishing on 142 for 4, with Pembo top scoring with 53. A tense finish saw BMRC reaching 143 for 7, so winning the match with just one ball to spare! James Corless top scored with 52 not out, with Ollie Thomas on 41.

All players (except wicket keepers) bowled and there were notable achievements by James Preston and a very young lad on the MACC side, each of whom took a wicket!

MACC laid on its usual superb buffet supper and the event was enjoyed by a small, but enthusiastic band of supporters, including Robin and Mary Shears amongst others.

The annual match has been played for the Memorial Trophy (the cup is now with the engravers) since 2001, with the score now level at seven wins each, with one tie and one year (2015) without a game due to the weather. It is an excellent “bonding” event for the two clubs which have had so much and so many players in common throughout their respective histories.

Next year being the 50th Anniversary of the Moseley Players Association, which organises the event jointly with the two clubs, there are embryonic plans to celebrate by making the match a particularly special social and cricketing occasion.
