What a night of rugby, a very tough win for the lads, playing about 35 minutes with 14 men and at one point down to 12 for 3 minutes and 13 for 7 minutes. Very tight opening 20 minutes before Oak went 5-0 up but within 2 minutes Lions had levelled the score. The game seemed to turn Lions way with Oak's first yellow but Oak held firm and broke away to take a 12-5 lead into half time. The message was stay firm and keep it tight, but within 2 minutes Oak were down to 13 men with another yellow, Lions missing the penalty kick at the posts, but shortly afterwards Lions went over in the corner but missed the kick 12-10. As the game became tighter Oak started to pick up their game up and went 15-10 up from a penalty, but then another yellow, this meant a sustained period of pressure, but Oak broke out again to score a try and take the score to 22-10, again the final and 4th yellow was shown but Oak held on with some great defence before breaking to earn another penalty,for to go 25-10 up. The best try of the night came in the last few minutes with Oak breaking from defence to go all the way up the pitch to switch the ball back inside for their final try 32-10. Yellow for Lions but with only minutes left the result was in the bag.

21 /21 now achieved, no let up, with the final game on Saturday against Shrewsbury, The game will be played at Newport Salop due to problems with the posts at Shrewsbury.

Considering Oak had already won the league and Stourbridge had nothing to play for it was a great game with both sides giving100%. I have ever seen a referee send a coach from the pitch side before but their coach was.i thought their full back was dangerous and scored one-off theirtriesbut after that we tackled before he made too much ground.

What was the problem with all the yellow cards?

I think two were for no arms used in the tackle or high tackle.

1st yellow for the 3rd offside in the 22, 2nd for no arms, 3rd alleged tackle in the air, ref admitted afterwards he may have got that wrong as both TJ's advised ball catcher was on the ground, not sure what the 4th card was for, think it was pulling back a runner without the ball. We move on, we have had history with the ref before but we put it behind us, we accept their decisions whether we believe them to be right or not, it's just a shame we are not given any leeway whilst our opponents get away with a lot, causes the frustrations to raise their heads. But we all know, if the ref isn't going your way then you listen more and don't give him the rope to hang us, even more.
Funnily the ref asked me to confirm the score after the game as he wasn't sure, he had it 10-29, both TJ's 10-32 and me 10-32, guess he wasn't on his game after a hard day at work maybe......but that's rugby live ....we move on

The ref may have sent his score into RFU as when I went to look at the table the score appeared as 29-10 but the score board at the game had it 32-10.

Home team phone through the result but then send the team sheet to the league secretary who confirms the result, the card has the correct result on it and this will be amended on the RFU website.
Good luck to Moseley 1st XV tonight, lets hope the wet weather works in our favour and we get the result we all wish for..

Stourbridge Lions 10 - 32 Moseley Oak

Moseley Oak maintained their unbeaten record with a hard fought win away at Stourbridge on Wednesday night. It was a close encounter until the last quarter when Moseley began to pull away.

The away side started with the wind behind them and were ambitious in their style of play, but were met with solid Stourbridge defence which stopped them in their tracks. After a number of penalties, Oak kicked to the corner and drove over the line, Duncan White the try scorer. The try was not converted.

Stourbridge responded quickly and after James Hussey was sent to the sin bin after repeated Oak infringements, the home side put in a deft cross-field kick which was gathered and touched down in the right hand corner for an unconverted try. Moseley rallied and finished the half with a try by Neil Mason near the posts, which was converted to give Oak a 5-12 lead at half time.

After a stern half time team talk, Moseley Oak started the second half poorly with a yellow card to Paul Cox, just after James Hussey had returned. Oak were able to score a James Hussey penalty but Stourbridge exploited Oak's lack of numbers with a strong counter attack and try, to leave the score 10-15.

Moseley began to revert to type and sap the energy out of Stourbridge with a series of dynamic pick and drives, but as soon as they were back to 15 men, they were shown another yellow card to Duncan White. Ben Gerry joined him soon afterwards, reducing the away side to 13. Oak continued with their pick and drive tactics, and once White had returned to the fray, they scored another try with Tom Johnson stepping through the defence underneath the posts. James Hussey converted, and followed up with a penalty minutes later to increase the lead.

Once Ben Gerry had returned to the field, Oak hammered home the advantage and battered their way upfield, culminating in a Will Crane bonus point try from a driving maul. The try was converted to leave the final score at 10-32 to Moseley Oak.


Moseley now have just one more game remaining to achieve a perfect record or 22 wins from 22 games. It is away against Shrewsbury, with the match taking place at Newport (Shropshire). Any support would be greatly appreciated.
