Maggs hugely disappointed in losing key member of Moseley squad.
One of Moseley Rugby’s favourite sons full back Anthony Carter today announced his retirement from rugby.
Unfortunately an injury sustained during last season has forced Anthony to step down from the sport prematurely following 121 appearances for the Billesley Common club.
Joining Moseley in 2010 from Doncaster, Shaggy as he is known to all in rugby circles had already achieved rugby success having represented Wales at both Student and 7s levels. He came to the club at a time when an experienced head was needed to marshal a young backline, and immediately became one of the first names to be added to Kevin Maggs team sheet every week.
One of the most likable players you could ever meet Anthony has been an exemplary example both on and off the field to young players coming through the Moseley ranks. Rock solid in defence supporters would relax when they saw Carter lining up an attacking player knowing he was virtually guaranteed to stop them. He also brought versatility to the club playing many games on the wing and in the centres.
Moseley Director of Rugby Kevin Maggs said of Anthony’s retirement:
“I’m hugely disappointed in losing someone like Anthony Carter out of the Moseley squad for this coming season.”
“He has been a key member of the group for the last 5 years and will leave a massive hole in the squad, both on and off the field. I know myself the management team, but most importantly the players, will miss Shaggy being around on a day to day basis. For what he brings with his energy, commitment and passion for the club he will be greatly missed.”
“The management, medical team and players would like to wish Anthony Carter and his family the very best for the future.”
Following his decision to retire Anthony reflected on what rugby has meant to him:
"After the initial sad realisation that another relegation battle, this time against Plymouth, would be my last game of rugby I consider I am lucky to have played 16 years of professional rugby and especially to finish at such a special club as Moseley RFC, who I feel proud and honoured to have represented both on and off the pitch."
"All that is left is to say is thank you - to my fellow players both young, old, past and present who I have shared some unbelievable battles with; to the core of supporters who have been tested by the situations we have found ourselves in and are always brilliant home or away, win or lose; to the individuals who give everything to the club especially the driving forces of Dave Warren, John Caves and Kevin Maggs who have supported me off the pitch and emphasise what a caring club Moseley RFC is."
"I look forward to supporting Moseley alongside the friends I have made on and off the pitch for the years to come"
And you will always be most welcome at Billesley Common Shaggy.
