The City of Birmingham Rugby Academy
Moseley Rugby Club has long been a firm advocate of player development, with an enviable record of producing players who go on to perform at elite levels but as with any progressive environment, an ambition for continuous improvement is a key goal.
In an exciting and innovative venture we recently invited a small number of players, through coach-led nominations, to become the first inductees into “CoBRA”, the City of Birmingham Rugby Academy.
The purpose of CoBRA is to recognise and further develop talented young rugby players in the 15 – 19 age range by engaging them in an advanced rugby development programme. First class coaching, delivered through a team headed by our First XV Head Coach Kevin Maggs, will be reinforced by professionally administered fitness and conditioning programmes and nutritional advice from Chris Kemp. Following the ethos of the RFU Academy Programme, players invited into CoBRA will be directed into a personal development programme geared primarily to ensuring that their capacities and abilities as a rugby player are maximised.
CoBRA will not be playing as a team – the vertical nature of the age range prevents this – but it will display a ‘team’ ethos in addition to its core values:
Support the development of rugby by offering the opportunity for further development of identified, talented, young players between U16-U20.
Through an academy programme that provides core/unit/team skill acquisition.
Encouraging players to fulfil their highest potential and offering an opportunity for the most talented to play in the Championship and above.
Ensuring that identity with the club is maintained and realising that elite rugby at all levels is challenging and demanding.
Develop the person, not simply the player.
Much more information about CoBRA will be made available over the next few weeks and as the initiative develops.
Recruitment is an open process though and we are happy to receive nominations of aspiring players from within Moseley and external to the club as part of the on-going expansion of CoBRA
Enquiries can be directed (via info@moseleyrugby.co.uk ) to the CoBRA management team of Academy Director Derek Nutt and Academy Manager Simon Bartlett.
We are also especially keen to hear from potential sponsors who might be willing to offer practical support for this new enterprise.
