Birmingham Moseley Rugby and its associated clubs and sections have been forced to cancel the annual Service of Remembrance by the Club’s War Memorial due to the new national lockdown brought about by Covid-19.
It is believed to be the first time that the service, organised by Moseley Players Association in conjunction with Moseley Ashfield Cricket Club, which took care of the Memorial from 2000 to 2018, has not been held for more than fifty years.
Ironically, all the arrangements had been made, with the Vicar, Bugler, other contributors and wreaths all booked and the service just a few hours from being publicised, when news broke that the West Midlands was to be moved into Tier 3 imminently, this being replaced by the lockdown announcement the next day.
The wreaths, of course, will certainly not be wasted. Birmingham Moseley President Peter Hill will lay the Club’s wreath at the War Memorial following the two minutes silence at 11.00 am on Sunday, after which, a representative of Moseley Ashfield will lay its wreath.
Under the Government regulations for such an occasion during lockdown, a small but unspecified number of people, in addition to the wreath layers, may attend to honour the two minutes’ silence whilst observing social distancing. A similar category of event stipulates a maximum of 15 to be present.
Accordingly, Birmingham Moseley Rugby has decided to allow a maximum of twelve adults to attend, in addition to the President and officials, but only after they have requested this in advance by contacting Peter Veitch on 07801 800201 or pv@investabroadproperties.com. As required by the regulations, he will record the contact details of those attending and keep a record of attendees for 21 days to assist the NHS Test and Trace programme, should this be necessary.
Please note that the Clubhouse will not be open at all on Sunday. A photograph of the War Memorial taken after the wreaths have been laid will be published next week.
