Won 34:32 I must admit I thought we were going to be in for a long afternoon after 15 mins when it was all B. Stortford. We looked like we were still in the changing room. However, slowly but surely we started to get into the game with the pack gaining the upper hand. I think we need to work on discipline as we had 3 players yellow carded. We gave away far too many penalties at times when we were pressurising their line. The difference between this season’s squad and last is fitness and this shone through when we were down to 14 players and Stortford pushed for the win. Aquile Smith scored another hat trick of tries and looked a class player (although he does need to practice catching the ball from the kick off!!!!!). We looked like we had a few injuries with both Jacques and Tony coming off. The scores in the other games in the Division seem to suggest, even at this early stage, that it is going to be very tight this year. Cinderford next week which will be a tough game as they have won all their games but if we play with the same passion and commitment that we did today we can come away with a win.
Aquile 1-2-3 could become a regular cry at the Common !
At least the heads didn't drop after that shocking start, and 24 unanswered points followed. But two yellow cards which left us playing with 13 for a short spell weren't fully exploited by Stortford, and with a third at the death, this could cost us dear against stronger opponents.
Discipline needs to be improved, but there are plenty of positive signs, one of them being Aquile's success which is in part down to getting the ball out to him.
Overall an enjoyable match and another bonus point win earned late on, where in previous seasons we would have been edged out.
Great to get 5 points. Well done Moseley. I'm still getting to know players but 10 Ben Palmer kicking is/will be critical & Morgan Dawes will become a fans favourite with Aquile Smith as quality finisher. Lineout looks so much better, esp from the despair of recent seasons.
However, if I was Bish Stortford, I would be gutted not to have won. Moseley seemed to pick up points everytime went into their 22. Great, can't recall ANY missed opportunities. But we must have stopped 5? situations on our own line, through fantastic defence. Their first kicker was poor, missed 10? points from very presentable positions & they also spilled forward in first half in process of falling over line. In fact BS performance & missed opportunities reminded me of so many Moseley results over past seasons. Should have...
That was such a close game! BP win and another wonderful performance but in particular superb hat-trick by winger Aquile Smith and a great kicking display by fly-half Ben Palmer. Long season to come and no easy games! We got to work hard for it!
