It did us well for a very long time - and we played better rugby as well. Moreover, too many of the tabloids, when giving rugby results, refer to Moseley at Birmingham NOT Birmingham Moseley. Is there a rugby team round here called simply Birmingham, I don't know?
Do any of the supporters shout out BIRMINGHAM MOSELEY at the matches. Do they eckers like. They shout out MOSELEY, every single time.
It just goes to illustrate beyond any question that the name change to Birmingham Moseley was a mitigating disaster and that the Birmingham element, therefore, should be dispensed with toot sweet.
I think when you choose to add to your club’s name, the name of a city with the population of 1 million people then the fans are allowed to, in fact are being asked to, think big!?
If the club are unwilling, or unable, to match the expectations associated with “rebranding” to carry the name of the second city in the Rugby world, then the fans can be forgiven for asking “what was the point?” ...
If we do go down and next season Birmingham and Solihull find themselves in a position above is in the league do we drop the Birmingham bit and go back to Moseley?
All this is a bit of a sideshow though, but symptomatic of the position we find ourselves in as a club!? I don’t understand all this “don’t blame him”, “don’t blame that”, “whats that got to do with it?” ... what are the fans supposed to do? Turn up every week believe the “jam tomorrow” in the programme and say nothing? Have no opinion?
If we were top nobody would be getting blamed (and nobody would bring up the name thing) but we’re not!? We are second bottom!? ...
Petespan ,,,,take it from someone who was involved with Moseley years ago ,even coached age grade there ,,,you are not allowed to criticize anyone there ,the hierarchy will take no notice of your opinion but they expect you to turn up every week and pay to watch rubbish while the club sinks lower and lower ,why ? ,,because they think its 1970 and it will never happen to them ,,,,,perhaps they will next season when they could be playing Bridgnorth in the league ,,,,and that's not being disrespectful to them!!!
The Moseley side were not good enough to stay in the championship, so the name change didn't do anything to the playing side.
People would still bleat on about the name change because we've had it since it was decided, even when we were pushing for promotion the first year of it.
If we get rid of Richard, who is there to teach our new head coach about life at this level? If there is to be a change in the management structure, do we think we could give Ossie more than three weeks at the club?
I understand the frustration, but if the players are switching off, who is really at fault? We're close to a couple of injury returns and the new coaching has only just started. Give it until Xmas, we're not exactly getting cut adrift here.

I thought this was the second year of a two year plan to return to the Championship. (With no stand-out side it would certainly have been the season to seriously push for promotion.) Instead, we have won only two matches, lie second from bottom and seem incapable of 'buying' a win at the moment. Surely it's time to say enough and let somebody else have a go at running things, improve confidence within the squad and try to turn things around before other sides pick-up their form and cut us adrift? Getting thrashed away at the team that sit only one place above us and giving away a 19 point lead at home are just two examples of unacceptable performances so far this season.
I have no doubt that RP is doing his very best and is as disappointed as the rest of us. However, this is a business and if we want to retain/attract good players, sponsors and supporters change is necessary.
Do some people honestly think that the name thing is being brought up here as a reason for our poor fortunes, or are they deliberately jumping on it because the truth is far closer to what “jonnoisgod” is saying?
No one is saying “you know what will turn this around? ... a bit of black tape on the shirts covering up the word Birmingham!” ... it’s something that did divide opinion when the decision was made to change the name, expect people to “grind their axes in public” when the club deliver the sort of results that we are seeing!
In that vain, let me “grind my axe” ... I’m afraid that what we are seeing is a club in decline, one relegation can be forgiven (if we are at least competitive in Nat 1, look at Ealing bouncing up and down until they finally replaced us in the Championship? Our “bounce back ability” lasted until we played played Hartpury Away) two relegations is decline (ok it hasn’t happened yet but we are hardly “heading in the right direction”)
I’m not saying I’ve got the answers but can’t we all, at least, agree to put the season so far in the worrying context of the last 3 or 4 years and realise that is we don’t wake up there are plenty of ambitious and vibrant clubs ready to take our place in Nat 1? (just look at the promoted teams beating us this year? Cinderford, Chinnor!?) ...
Like many other supporters I cannot put my hand on the problem. We have some very good players indeed in the Moseley squad including players in key positions but we simply cannot play as a team. I say that in it's broad context because the first half on Saturday showed just what Moseley CAN do when they play AS A TEAM.
The creativity was there; the full break was there; the half break was there; close the support play - perhaps THE most important aspect of TEAM PLAY - was there. And there were numbers and options to support a kick ahead, a couple of which produced tries. In addition to that ALL the TEAM covered back when defending. That is the sign of TEAM PLAY; a TEAM playing with confidence.
And then the second half came about and we all know what happened. All that first half confidence disappeared.
And THAT is the unexplained conundrum.
Chinnor were no different in the second half. They still had better individual ball handling skills than Moseley - nothing new there; they could jink past the first tackler - nothing new there; they still had more speed out wide than Moseley - nothing new there; they were unable to dominate the scrum - nothing new there; they still kicked through more than Moseley - nothing new there; they still had a better line out than Moseley - nothing new there; they still had a better driving maul than Moseley - nothing new there.
So what was the difference.
They had more possession, more space, and a weaker, less effective Moseley defence. Simple as that.
Like any message board (and I'm all in favour of comment) it tends to polarise views and sometimes only attract those with particularly strong views...…...not a problem.
But, in this context there's only a few 'calling for the head of the king' which leaves me to believe 'the rest of us' (silent majority?) recognise that RP and Ossie are - made of the 'right stuff'; - are trying hard; - have the skills to get the best out of what (clearly based on 'that 20 minutes last Sat') to win.
We have seen a mix of good and bad on the pitch, and always seem close to turning the corner without actually managing it ... yet. The table doesn't lie and shows we have the second lowest overall points total.
But it also shows that we have picked up six losing bonus points from those nine defeats, contributing to the highest BP in the league, and our Points For is competitive and comparable with many of the clubs at the top.
The Point Against is probably the telling stat, with only Loughborough being worse. Tighten up the defence - physically, mentally, in organisation - and this league, where no other defence is perfect, is still open to us.
I concur with Shy Spa that the closeness of the Moseley FOR points in relation to the rest of the league clearly identify Moseley as being able to score points as well as the best in the league. Sadly the closeness of the points AGAINST in relation to the rest of the league clearly identify that Moseley are capable of shipping points as well as the worst in the league, particularly in the last quarter of the game.
It is that last quarter of the game which seems to be the main problem. Whether it is fitness or not I do not know but surely the players must know. And if the players know then they must be brutally honest with each other and speak their mind so that something positive can be done about it.
One could argue that if the Moseley problems were indeed down to coaching they would be consistently poor week in, week out. But they are not, as the first half of last weeks game clearly demonstrated.
Perhaps it might be worth considering engaging a reputable premiership / national coach, to examine all the Moseley match videos this season and give some advice to our current coaching set up.
Surely there can be no shame in asking for professional advice.

Like one who has spent 20+ years coaching with a Premiership team like Harlequins?
We all hope that that is exactly what Collin can bring to the team. Early days yet for him but it was clear from the meet the Head Coach evening that he was looking hard at current performances to isolate areas to improve. It was interesting he said he couldn't rush changes into the match day until the team were competent in execution, suggesting a pragmatic approach to delivering improvement without making hollow promises.

Some may wish to agree that since 29.10.18 there has been more structure and I believe a more injury free squad - though that's difficult to tie down from where I sit.
We have reduced the against column somewhat since 29.10.18.
We have all witnessed or read of the very close calls in the last 3 matches which we have lost but when we have displayed skill and spirit.
From comments prior to DMP it sounds to me as if we struggle, at times, to maintain a squad regularly with a number of players contracted to other Clubs who have first call on these players. I stand to be corrected on my interpretation of the comments from the Noticeboard on Fiday/Saturday
So its 4 points v RP, 0 points v Blackheath, 5 points v Sale.
Sorry for the confusion ... what has changed in the 2 month since this thread was created? ...
We are still hopelessly inconsistent (not just from one game to another but even during games!?) and we are no better in terms of league position, in fact we are exactly the same!
When we get a positive result there’s the feeling “good old Ossie he’ll work some magic, some “tricks” he learnt at Quinn’s, and we’ll turn the corner” only we never do!? We lose the next two games and stand still in the league! ...
I can’t see any other plan/outcome than we “run down the clock”, play all our games, and after the last game of the season hope it is one of those weeks that we find ourselves outside the bottom 3!? ...
Although it will be a very sad day if Moseley go down at the end of the season - or even if it confirmed before then - I will still support them, as I have done for high on 40 years. In all honesty I cannot envisage great euphoria or even a sense of elation if Moseley do stay up because all it will do is confirm the end of a very disappointing season - so far - along with the prospect of yet another long emotionally charged scrap next season - that is provided we hang on to all our good players.
If I may offer a couple of 'comfort thoughts' with regards to possibility going down next season then the first could, theoretically, be a more rewarding season in terms of 'winning games'.
The second thought, if I understand the RFU support funding of 'grass roots rugby' correctly, is that there should be no noticeable difference to the Moseley income ( RFU ) - a mere pittance at best, nowt at worst - so the financial shock as previous seasons will ( should not ) happen.
It is lovely to hear loyal supporters continually offering encouragement to remain strong and optimistic in the face of great distress and that is appreciated, but life, sadly is not all roses. There is many a storm which batters the flowers, knocks the petals off and breaks the stems but so long as the plant is carefully pruned, the root is lovingly nurtured and looked after, even replanted, then there is hope for survival. With all that TLC there will be every chance that, just like a new dawn following a new dusk, a new life will emerge. The flower may not be a strong as before but at least it will survive.
And that is what we must all strive towards.
