Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club are pleased to announce that fan favourite Buster Lawrence has been appointed as 1st XV captain for the 2017/18 season.
Buster re-joined the Billesley Common side from Championship club Rotherham Titans. This season represents his third with the club having been initially signed as a twenty one year old in 2012 from Ding Crusaders.
Having made 51 appearances for the club Buster was spotted by Premiership outfit Wasps who he joined in 2014, only to return again on loan that season. The 2015/16 season saw Buster again commit to the club directly. Unfortunately relegation at the end of the season saw him forced to look to continue his professional career at Rotherham.
The dedication to the club that has seen him want to again return to play in red and black, combined with his Premiership and Championship experience, makes him an ideal candidate to lead the new look squad forward.
Commenting on his appointment Buster said: “It's a great privilege and great surprise to be given the captaincy this year. As much as I was honoured to be asked I was also taken aback by it, as I had never thought about it prior to the conversation with the coaching team.
Once I had spoken it the coaches and senior players though the weight was lifted off my shoulders due to the support and leadership in the team around me. I won't be the kind of captain that gives long speeches every session but hopefully I can play my part in helping the team move in the right direction.
I look forward to being part of what the club has planned for this year and how we have been going about that this pre-season. It's a fresh start with new coaches and players and everyone from the young to the senior players will fully agree that it's been the hardest pre-season we have had for many years but our fitness levels without doubt show the benefit of it.
It will be a tough, long season but the coaches have put a strong squad together which will require everyone to play their part throughout.”
Birmingham Moseley Director of Rugby Richard Protherough said of the appointment: “In my opinion, the best captains are ones that earn the respect of their team mates by what they do on and off the field. They have excellent work ethic, professionalism and lead through what they do not just what they say. When I sat down to finally choose, Buster Lawrence ticked every box and I’m pleased to announce him as Ist XV Captain. Buster is a popular member of the dressing room and culturally epitomises the qualities we are looking to build as a team and a club."
