Apologies from the temporary editor of Moseley Matters............I completely missed the Under 16s report hence why it’s posted up here for all to see!
....and it sounds like a great win to get to the semi-finals of the North Midlands Cup – well done all!
UNDER 16s win
North Mids Cup quarter final
Whitchurch 20 - 32 Moseley
Deep fog greeted us on our arrival at Whitchurch for our quarter final in the North Mids Cup.
New opposition whom we hadn't played before, but all too aware that both teams had everything to fight for. Moseley had the kick off and took game deep into the opposition 22. The game was played with passion and commitment from both sides.
There were a string of early scrums, a Whitchurch penalty, and lineouts to both sides. Our lineout is now working well, lifting Will Handy high to collect our ball or disrupt the opposition's catching to great effect. The intensity continued, with the majority of the first 10 minutes played in the mid-section of the pitch. Whitchurch were sharper on the tackles, Moseley made more use of wrap tackling, holding up the mauls and gaining scrums as a result.
Powerful attacks from Kevwe/flanker and Ben/centre almost broke the solid defence. 15 minutes in Whitchurch's wing broke down the right, gaining a line out 10 m inside our 22, the first foray deep into our half. Our defence held but the pressure forced mistakes and we surrendered a penalty in front of the posts: 3-0. Moseley remained calm.
The restart pushed the opposition deep, forwards chased the opening kick, sucking in defence, enabling Ben/centre and Henry/fly half to pierce the defence. Forwards were supporting well and within minutes of the restart Josh/prop was over for try, converted by Henry: 3-7.
The half continued to oscillate: possession 50%, much of the play within the two 22s.
A poorly judged kick from Moseley gave possession away, quick hands through the backs, stretched us too wide and Whitchurch were over: 8-7. However, once again the boys showed maturity and control. Unruffled, they took the game back to the opposition. A deep restart, we held up the maul gaining a scrum. Picking and driving forwards once again sucked in the defence, scything runs from Ben/centre and Osian/centre fed Cameron/wing to score under the posts, converted by Osian: 8-15 on the stroke of half time.
Second half once again swung back in Whitchurch's favour. Deep restart, a fumbled knock on not spotted by the referee, put them over to score with only seconds on the clock. Disastrous! 13-15.
Unlike in our previous Worcester encounter, Moseley refused to get ruffled. The response was focused and clinical. Repeated driving attacks took us deep into Whitchurch territory. Pressure was maintained winning a 5 m scrum. Whitchurch kicked out in defence giving us the line out on the 22. Outstanding driving maul drove them back at least 15 metres. Then the ball was sent out to the backs, stretching defence left to right, enabling Danny/wing to score on the right: 13-20.
Whitchurch came back hard, and the pressure cost us as they neatly intercepted a wide pass to the wing to score and convert shortly after the restart: 20-20. Once again we regrouped and returned the favour winning a lineout on their 22, another rolling maul up the left flank, releasing backs to pierce the rattled defence, first Osian, and then Ben and finally Arran fought his way round a ruck to score: 20-25.
The second half continued nip and tuck. Our forwards were tireless, the backs unrelenting, the many rehearsed plays were now looking sharp and natural. Although we missed a penalty in front of the posts, we still recovered possession in the final minutes with Ben/centre (Man of the Match) over to score, converted by Arran: 20-32.
An outstanding performance by the squad, played in great spirit by both teams, passionate, energetic and a fast open game throughout. We would welcome Whitchurch back in future seasons. Onwards to the semi-finals!
Many thanks to parents for making the long trip, to the subs - it is never easy to get all on in a cup game of this intensity- and to the boys for turning round an unfortunate result vs Worcester in previous weeks with such maturity and resilience. Well done.
