Can we please stop this perennial excuse "we have the smallest playing budget in the Championship" and that "Maggsie is hampered by a lack of funds". In fact we have budgets not disimilar to a number of clubs in our league. Yes perhaps a majority of other clubs may have some advantages over us at the moment (Bristol, Welsh, Pirates, Bedford etc) and are further down the track of building their support, facilities and income streams but from conversations with those in the know at our competitors we all face similar funding challenges and we are not out of whack with them in our finances. In fact in some areas of our operations (eg community work contributions) we are better! Others are heavily reliant on major sponsors or sugar daddies and when that goes (remember Newbury/Vodaphone or now perhaps Plymouth/main backer) the whole dynamic can change.
The crucial point is not how much money you have in your budget , its how you use it that matters. A new coach being able to bring in new players who fit his ethos and playing style after using many inherited ones last season I see as an opportunity not as a backward step.
I can only repeat - if the departing players are all that good, how come we were only two places off the bottom last season?
Every season, players at all clubs move on for one reason or another and we often get better prospects in their places. I for one am quietly optimistic about next season and not really worried about the departures. I can't see the point in getting worried or worked up about it at this stage although I suppose it's good to get a decent debate going on the Board again!
