“Exciting start to the season and a famous old fixture revived on Boxing Day”
“Three more commit to Moseley for 2011-12”[/b]
The RFU Championship Fixtures announced last week confirm an exciting start to the 2011-12 season for Moseley - and a welcome move back to a September start for the league.
The club is scheduled to play back to back home games as season openers with Cornish Pirates visiting on the first weekend (Sat 3rd September 3pm) followed by the club’s nearest neighbours in the league, Nottingham, the following weekend (Sat 10th September 3pm).
An historic fixture is in store for Boxing Day with the visit of London Scottish. The two sides haven’t met in a competitive fixture this century although there had been regular fixtures during the previous 100 years!
In the 2011-12 B&I Cup group stages Moseley starts off with Munster at home in a group including Welsh Premiership side Cross Keys, Bristol and Plymouth. This season includes two mandatory mid week Cup fixtures and Moseley’s home tie will be against Plymouth on Wednesday September 21st (7.30pm).
The club also has pleasure in updating supporters of the squad which is continuing to take shape for next season. Further retentions and some additions to the squad are expected to be announced shortly but to date those confirmed for the season ahead include:
Anthony Carter, Adam Caves, Brad Davies, Michael Ellery, Ryan De La Harpe, Jamie Hearn, Brad Hunt, Greg King, Michael Maltman, Neil Mason, Chevvy Pennycook, Ben Pons, Andy Reay, Dan Sanderson, Paul Spivey, Richard Stott, Gareth Taylor,Charley Thomas, Ollie Thomas and Craig Voisey.
Charley Thomas
……….Moseley Mini & Juniors, Colts, Oak – and now 1st XV squad
Moseley Rugby Club is pleased to announce the signing of hooker Charley Thomas and in particular the fact that this is the first promotion of a player from sister club Moseley Oak. This underlines the club’s policy of working closely with former Colts who progress into senior rugby through Oak (promoted to Midlands 2 West for the 2011-12 season).
A real ‘home grown’ product, Charley learnt his rugby in Moseley Minis under the guidance of Terry Malins and Les Barwood, playing all the way through to Colts. He then spent three years with Worcester Academy whilst completing his degree at Worcester University, making an appearance for Worcester 1st XV (against Harlequins) and playing regularly in ‘A’ League fixtures.
Having been signed on the Apprenticeship scheme last season in conjunction with his full time work as a Teacher, Charley was instrumental in the promotion exploits of Moseley Oak and now looks to push his case for 1st XV selection at Billesley.
Having played various positions in the pack Charley converted to hooker two seasons ago, although is still more than capable of playing in the back row. Charley has excellent ball handling skills and a good turn of pace for a big lad. We are delighted that Charley once again will pull on the red and black colours he has worn since he was 7!
