Canadian U20 International from Down Under Bolsters the Back Line for the 2018/2019 Season
Director of Rugby, Richard Protherough has used the current season to bring in new talented youngsters and integrate them with the more experienced members of the squad in readiness for a push for promotion in the 2018/2019 season.
To support that aim Richard has now begun recruitment for next season by signing new centre, Sam Hayward. He will join a backline which includes Ollie Allsopp and Sam Pointon, who have both now re-signed for next season. Also re-signing for next season we are pleased to announce are forwards Jay Tyack, Joe Wrafter, and Josh Poole. With 13 of the current squad on two year contracts, for the first time for some years Richard is able to begin pre-season with a team experienced in playing together and keen to build on this year.
The new signing brings a player with International experience to the club. Australian born Sam played his early rugby for the Sydney University Club at Colts level up to the age of 19. In December 2013 he re-located to Canada to pursue his ambition to play for the Canadian team. Sam’s mother was born and raised in Alberta and British Columbia. Sam made it into the Under 20’s team, playing on the tour to England in 2014 and played in every match in the Under 20’s Junior World Trophy in Hong Kong in the same year. Sam also toured the U.K. with Canada A and South America with Canada 7s in 2016.
Sam returned to Australia in 2015 when he joined the Parramatta Club in Sydney. Although the club did not enjoy great success in the Shute Shield last year, Sam was one of their stand out players.
Sam now 24, stands 6ft 5ins tall and should be a real handful in mid field. He also brings versatility to the backline being able to play at full back and fly half as well as centre.
Sam Hayward said “I’m really looking forward to playing at Birmingham Moseley. It’s a club with a lot of history and looks to be well positioned and organised for next season”.
Richard Protherough, Director of Rugby said “We are delighted to welcome Sam Hayward to Birmingham Moseley. He is an excellent addition to our backline and can play in 3 positions (centre, fullback and fly half). Having watched a number of his games, Sam is a ball player who also has a physical presence which is required in National 1.
