MOSELEY RUGBY CLUB
*****PRESS RELEASE******
07-Sep-2011
“ The World Cup comes to Moseley’s Billesley Common”
110 years after Moseley Rugby Club represented Great Britain the 1900 Paris Olympics, the club is looking forward to assisting with another “globally representative” event at Billesley Common.
Many of Birmingham’s major financial services organisations compete in the inaugural “Barclays Wealth Touch Rugby Tournament” this Friday.
‘Mirrors’ the iRB World Cup
The competition ‘mirrors’ the forthcoming IRB World Cup and each of the participating organisations has been ‘paired’ (at random) with one of the 16 countries in the ‘other’ World Cup in New Zealand.
All for Charity
Proceeds raised will go towards two worthy charities, the Moseley Rugby Community Foundation which carries out the club’s acclaimed community work throughout Greater Birmingham and the Wooden Spoon Society which provides many sports related activities throughout the UK
The tournament in New Zealand kicks off on Friday 9th September at 9.30am (BST) whilst the Moseley version kicks off the same day at 2.00pm (Billesley Standard Time).
Tough Draws for ‘Home Nations’?
The Barclays Wealth Touch Rugby Tournament draw was made at the beginning of August to allow the teams to organise their ‘replica’ kit and (presumably) add an appropriate training regime to imitate the countries they will ‘represent’. The competition consists of four pools of four teams. Each team will play three matches in the pool stages.
GROUP A

Friday 9th 2pm kick off; 6.40pm finals
The first matches kick off at 2pm and the group matches will continue throughout the afternoon culminating in the Shield Final at 6.20pm and the Cup Final at 6.40pm.
Presentations at 7pm will be followed by a re-run of the ‘alternative’ World Cup opening match played earlier in the day – New Zealand v Tonga.
How will England do?
Much focus will be on the performance of PWC (Price Waterhouse Cooper aka England), whilst the other ‘Home Nations’ of SS Hammonds (Wales), and Mazars (Scotland) are sure to get good local support. Will KPMG choke? Have the Wooden Spoon Baa Baas got a strong enough pack?
How it all works
Matches will consist of six-a-side selected from an unlimited squad and played under normal RFU Touch rugby rules along with rolling substitutes - and with at least one female on the pitch at all times.
All group, second round and quarter final matches will be five minutes each way with one minute for the teams to change ends at half time. Semi finals and finals will be eight minutes each way with two minutes at half time.
Spectators Welcome
Spectators are warmly welcomed (no entry fee) and the clubhouse will be serving its highly acclaimed food along with a variety of award winning Real Ales……………and wines from IRB countries!
Charities being supported
Although there is no entry fee, there will be a charity raffle which will be drawn at the end of the tournament and these leading professional firms will be supporting the following nominated charities:
Moseley Rugby Community Foundation
Moseley’s community programme coaches 15,000 youngsters in Greater Birmingham each year. Young Professional players at the club combine training as full time rugby players with their work within the Community Department. These players are regular 1st XV squad members and the work they undertake is helping to revitalise inner city Birmingham and teach youngsters respect, teamwork and sportsmanship.
"By delivering a high quality product in the most needy areas of Birmingham we help to keep youngsters motivated and safe through a sport which traditionally has not been available to them", said Nick Avgousti, the club’s Community Development Manager. "Rugby is an ideal medium to channel youthful aggression and learn discipline and respect for team mates and the opposition.”
The partnership with and the support of Birmingham City Council has enhanced the club’s coaching options and helped to provide an easily accessible Rugby Centre of Excellence at Billesley Common in the heart of the City.
Wooden Spoon
Founded in 1983, Wooden Spoon compromises 40 regional volunteer committees as well as a central national team and they boast more than 10,000 members across the UK and Ireland. The regional committees undertake local fundraising activities and ensure that the money is spent on projects in their community so that the benefit of our work is always immediate, visible and lasting.
During its first 25 years, over half a million young people benefitted from more than £15 million pounds of charitable support thanks to the efforts of their staff and volunteers.
