Moseley Oak go into this Saturday’s home game against high flying Old Salts buoyed by a fine win at Burntwood 39-5.
It was arguably the best performance of the season and sent the side to fifth in Midlands Two West North.
Old Salts are clear of the chasing pack in second place and look well set for promotion – Stoke are way top having not lost a game.
Could Moseley Oak conceivably catch Old Salts?
Very unlikely but not impossible, and turning them over would be a start.
A big challenge and a real test of how far the side has improved since a terrible start to the season when one wondered where a first win would come from.
The target then was simply to avoid relegation; there would have to be an almighty collapse for that to happen now.
Instead, with the players full of confidence, there is hope of pushing on, maybe to third – which itself would represent an excellent effort.
It’s the old adage of not looking past the next game and seeing where Moseley Oak can end up.
It was when the club were still trying to adjust after promotion last year, and the team was far from settled, that Old Salts were victorious on their ground 33-15.
Moseley Oak struggled to get a decent pack out that day.
Hopefully it will be different on Saturday.
A few walking wounded are currently being patched up, with back row man Greg Cox picking up a knock and hooker Jonathan Duckers having to make a trip to Heartlands Hospital for treatment to an ear.
It was five tries to two in the first contest.
But Moseley Oak will be hoping that just as they found it tricky adapting to the wide and windy Old Salts park their opponents may find it just as difficult whether, dependent on the weather, the game goes ahead on Billesley Common, where the home squad know how to exploit every undulation, or on the first team pitch with its ability to inspire a performance under the scrutiny of some discerning eyes.
It is shaping up to be an intriguing fixture.
Both sides like to attack so it should be a decent spectacle too.
So long as the frost relents – and it could go down to an eleventh hour inspection – it will be game on and may the best man win.
